Description (Topaza pella)
One
of the most striking species of hummingbirds. I put it among the top
five of the near 340 found all over The Americas. It is around 19
cm with its long two-feathers tail, possesses a strong slightly curved
beak and an outstanding bright yellow gorget coming out of the
infinitum flame red variations, a flashing spark light announcing its
presence in a territory, joined to its high pitch and strong call. The
Crimson Topaz inhabits the southeastern part of Venezuela, northern
Brazil, Guyana, Surinam, French Guyana and Colombia but it is mainly
found in Venezuela and Guyana. Normally it is barely seen high in the
amazon canopy where it displays its behavior and continuous calls
for territory.
The female seems to be another bird, with greens
reflections instead of reds but keeping a yellow-orange gorget,
although not as bright as the male has, also very territorial.

Then some shots feeding on flowers.2-A short segment of the final minutes of the documentary "Feathered Fantasy", where 5 males dispute the only feeding hole on the hummingbird feeder, a way to show the tremendous territoriality of these tiny birds.
Descripción (Topaza pella)
El Topacio Candela Colicanelo es una de las mas resaltantes especies de la famila de las casi 340 especies de colibríes que habitan Las Americas, para quien escribe, una de las 5 grandes. Mide alrededor de 19 centímetros con su larga cola formada por dos plumas que se cruzan en la parte inferior. Posee un pico corto y fuerte, ligeramente curvado y una gorgera (gorget) amarillo brillante que se destaca del caleidoscopio de rojos del resto de su plumaje, un rayo saliendo del bosque cuando hace su display territorial, el cual complementa con su agudo y fuerte llamado. Habita Colombia, sureste de Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam, Guayana Francesa y norte de Brasil, pero es más común hallarlo en Venezuela y Guyana. Apenas suele verse muy alto en los árboles de los bosques amazónicos, donde despliega su comportamiento físico y vocal. La hembra parece otra especie, imaginemos el mismo animal pero sin cola y en matices verdes de color, el resto es muy parecido al macho.
